Ceramic Coating
How Long Does Ceramic Coating Really Last in Canberra Conditions?
"4 years" and "5 years" are the numbers on the paperwork. They're honest numbers, backed by IGL's manufacturer warranty — but they're a baseline, not a guarantee. What actually happens to a coating over that time depends heavily on where the car lives, how it's washed, and what Canberra throws at it in between.
The rated baseline
Our two IGL Coatings tiers are rated differently: Arcane, the single-layer PETRONAS graphene formula, is rated 4 years. Kenzo, the dual-layer graphene option, is rated 5 years. Those ratings assume the vehicle is maintained reasonably — they're not a countdown that ignores how the car is actually looked after.
What Canberra throws at your paint
Canberra's climate is harder on a coating than people expect. Summers bring long stretches of strong, direct UV — the single biggest factor in how any clear coat and coating ages over time, especially on panels that sit in full sun for hours each day. Winters swing the other way: cold mornings, frost, and roads that pick up grit and grime that sits on the paint if it isn't washed off regularly. In between, the region's dry conditions mean dust settles on parked cars faster than owners often realise, particularly on driveways and unsealed parking.
None of that means the coating fails early by default — resisting exactly this kind of wear is the point of it. But it does mean two cars with the same coating, applied on the same day, can age differently depending on how much of it they're exposed to. A car doing daily freeway commutes through Canberra's outer suburbs, parked outside at both ends of the trip, is simply working its coating harder than one that mostly does short trips and spends its downtime under cover.
Seasonal swings matter too. A coating doesn't get a gentle, gradual year — it goes from baking under summer UV to sitting through frosty mornings within a few months. That kind of swing is exactly what a genuine IGL coating is engineered to handle, but it's also why "how long will it last" doesn't have one universal answer across every car in Canberra.
Garage vs outdoor parking
This is one of the biggest swing factors we see. A car garaged overnight and for most of the day gets meaningfully less UV and weather exposure than one parked on the street or an open driveway year-round. It's not that an outdoor-parked car's coating fails — it's that a garaged car has an easier run at reaching, or exceeding, its rated life.
What shortens a coating's life
The biggest culprit is wash technique. Dry-wiping dust off the paint grinds grit into the coating instead of lifting it away. Single-bucket washing and dishwashing liquid — rather than pH-neutral shampoo — strip the coating's finish faster than they should. Automatic car washes with brushes or rollers are the worst offender: they cause swirl marks on coated and uncoated paint alike. On top of that, waxing or sealing over the coating, heavy tar remover use, abrasive polishes and high-heat steam cleaning all wear it down ahead of schedule. And skipping annual maintenance checks means small issues go unnoticed — and can lapse your warranty.
What extends it
The flip side is straightforward and well documented on our own coating maintenance page: hand washing with pH-neutral shampoo and the two-bucket method, microfibre only, no automatic brush washes. IGL Ecoclean maintenance spray between washes and an IGL E-Coat topper annually. And the annual maintenance check itself — it assesses the coating's condition, tops it up if needed, clears out stubborn contamination, and keeps the warranty active.
| Shortens the coating's life | Extends the coating's life | |
|---|---|---|
| Wash method | Automatic brush or roller wash | Hand wash, two-bucket method |
| Products | Dishwashing liquid, dry-wiping dust | pH-neutral shampoo, IGL Ecoclean spray |
| Parking | Outdoors, full sun, unsealed driveway | Garaged or shaded where possible |
| Upkeep | Skipped annual checks, waxing over the coating | Annual check-in and IGL E-Coat topper |
So how long will yours actually last?
A garaged car with proper wash habits and annual check-ins will typically reach its rated life comfortably, sometimes beyond it. A daily driver parked outside can still get there with reasonably consistent maintenance — Canberra's conditions are a factor, not a dealbreaker. What genuinely shortens a coating is neglect: automatic washes, harsh products, and skipped annual checks. The coating does the heavy lifting against UV, grit and dust — your side of the deal is washing it properly and turning up once a year.
It's also worth remembering the rated life is a floor, not a ceiling. IGL backs Arcane and Kenzo with a genuine manufacturer warranty precisely because those numbers hold up under normal use — they're not marketing best-case figures. If your coating looks tired well before its rated year is up, that's usually a maintenance issue worth raising at your next check-in, not something to just live with.
Common questions
Coating lifespan FAQs.
IGL Arcane is rated 4 years and IGL Kenzo 5 years. That's the manufacturer baseline assuming reasonable care — real-world results depend on how the car is parked, washed and maintained.
Yes. Strong UV exposure over summer, cold and grit through winter, and dust in dry periods all add wear over the coating's life, particularly for cars parked outdoors rather than garaged.
Wrong wash technique, dishwashing liquid instead of pH-neutral shampoo, automatic brush car washes, and skipping annual maintenance checks are the main causes of a coating underperforming its rated life.
Generally, yes. Less UV exposure and less time collecting road grit and dust between washes both reduce the wear the coating has to deal with, which helps it perform closer to — or beyond — its rated life.
Yes. An annual check assesses the coating's condition, applies a maintenance topper if needed, removes stubborn contamination, and keeps your manufacturer warranty valid.
