Swirl marks, fine scratches, water etching, oxidation — we remove them permanently. Canberra's premium paint correction studio, using professional-grade compounds, paint thickness gauges and LED inspection lighting on every job.
Paint correction is the professional process of using machine polishers, abrasive compounds and graded pads to permanently remove surface defects from a vehicle's clear coat. Unlike a quick wax or detail spray — which simply fill and temporarily hide defects — paint correction physically removes the damaged layer of clear coat to reveal pristine paint beneath.
Done correctly, the result is a surface that reflects light with perfect clarity — no swirls, no haze, no ghosting. When observed in direct sunlight, a fully corrected vehicle shows only accurate, undistorted reflections. Canberra's UV intensity, hard water and temperature extremes make paint correction one of the most common requests we receive at Top Down Detailing.
⚠ Important distinction
Products like all-in-one polishes, car shampoo with gloss enhancers, and filling glazes do not perform paint correction. They temporarily fill scratches with polymers that wash away within weeks, leaving the original defect completely intact. True paint correction removes the defect permanently — there's nothing to wash away.
If the damage hasn't broken through to the primer, machine polishing can fix it.
Fine circular scratches from improper washing — the #1 paint defect in Australia.
Light surface scratches from brushes, keys, branches or drive-through car washes.
Mineral deposits baked into the clear coat by Canberra's hard tap water and sun.
Acidic bird droppings chemically etch clear coat if left even a few hours.
High-speed buffer marks left by untrained polishing — visible under light.
UV-degraded paint that has lost its gloss and turned chalky or flat.
All packages include full decontamination and paint thickness assessment as standard.

Every vehicle follows the same rigorous process — no shortcuts, no skipped steps.
Every correction starts with a thorough multi-stage decontamination — foam pre-wash, contact wash, iron remover, tar removal and clay bar treatment. This removes all bonded contamination before a pad ever touches the paint.
We measure paint depth on every panel with a professional gauge. Knowing exactly how much clear coat we have to work with allows us to correct aggressively where safe and conservatively where needed — protecting your paint for the long term.
We examine the paint under LED lighting and a paint inspection lamp, cataloguing defects panel-by-panel. This determines which compounds, pads and machine settings will achieve the result without removing unnecessary material.
Using professional dual-action and rotary polishers with a matched combination of cutting, polishing and finishing compounds, we work through each panel systematically. Every stage is checked under lighting before progressing.
All polish residue and filler is removed with an IPA (isopropyl alcohol) wipe-down, revealing the true corrected surface with no masking. The vehicle is inspected under high-powered LED lighting before leaving the correction bay.
A corrected surface is the ideal foundation for IGL ceramic coating or paint protection film. We recommend sealing the work immediately to preserve the result — this is always quoted and discussed before your booking.
Paint correction and ceramic coating are the natural pairing. Correction removes every existing defect. Ceramic coating then locks that result in — protecting your perfect paint from future swirls, UV, and chemical attack. Applying a ceramic coating to uncorrected paint traps all existing defects permanently underneath. If you're investing in a coating, correct first.
