Why BMWs show every mark
Dark paint hides nothing.
A large share of the BMWs we see are finished in the dark colours: Black Sapphire, Carbon Black, Tanzanite, Dravit Grey. They look superb when they are right and they look tired the moment they are not.
Dark metallics show swirl marks more clearly than any other finish. Damage that would be invisible on a silver car is obvious on Black Sapphire the first time you park it in direct sun, and most of that damage comes from washing rather than driving.
The Shadowline gloss black exterior trim has the same problem. It is effectively piano black on the outside of the car, sitting exactly where people brush past it, and it scratches accordingly.
The work
Get the depth back, then keep it.
Correction. This is the main event on most BMWs. A multi stage correction to remove wash induced swirls and light scratching, then a finishing polish to bring back the depth that makes a dark metallic look wet rather than flat.
Gloss black trim. The Shadowline grilles, window surrounds and mirror caps get corrected and protected alongside the paint. Left alone they end up more scratched than the panels around them.
Protection. A ceramic coating is particularly worthwhile on dark paint, because most swirl damage comes from washing and a coated car is far more forgiving to wash. For M cars and anything doing highway distance, paint protection film on the nose stops the stone chips that show up badly on dark colours.
Interior. Dakota and Merino leather, and the gloss black interior trim that scratches as easily as the exterior version. Covered under interior detailing.
M cars and daily drivers
Same paint, different use.
An M car that sees the occasional track day has different needs to an X5 doing the school run, but the paint behaves the same way. The M cars tend to want film coverage extended and more attention to wheels and brake dust; the daily drivers want the wash cycle made as low risk as possible.
Either way the biggest single improvement for most owners is getting the car corrected once, properly, and then coated so that routine washing stops adding new marks.
We work across 1 to 8 Series, X models, M cars and the i range. Have a look at the reviews for what owners have said, and indicative pricing is listed by service.
Common questions
BMW FAQs.
Because dark metallic paint shows fine scratching that lighter colours hide, and most of that scratching is introduced by washing. Automatic washes are the worst offender, but incorrect wash technique at home does it too. Correction removes the existing marks and a coating makes future washes much lower risk.
In most cases yes. Gloss black trim can be corrected much like paint, though it is softer and needs a lighter approach. Once corrected we protect it, because it sits where people brush past the car and will mark again quickly if left bare.
It is arguably more worthwhile on dark paint than on any other colour. It will not prevent every mark, but it makes the paint easier and safer to wash, and washing is where most swirl damage on these cars comes from.
Yes. Track use usually means extending paint protection film coverage beyond the standard front end, and more attention to wheels, brake dust and rubber pickup than a road car needs.
